Senior Awards Contest and critique winners will be announced at the ASPA State Convention, Feb. 19-10, 2018, on the University of Alabama campus, as well as winners of the senior awards. To be considered for the awards, seniors must have at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and have participated in high school journalism for at least one year. Applicants may be involved in any media activity – newspapers, yearbooks, literary magazines, magazines, broadcast and web-based or multimedia journalism. Seniors can apply for multiple awards with a single portfolio. Awards and critiques for schools not represented at State Convention will be mailed to the school after the event. The Alabama Scholastic Press Association at the University of Alabama invites middle and high school students (grades 6-12) to register for its summer journalism camp, The Long Weekend, on campus June 8-10. Students can attend with or without their media staffs and advisers. The cost for the weekend is $170, which includes room and board, tuition and all meals. ASPA Director Meredith Cummings said the University of Alabama journalism department is proud to carry on summer programs, are a vital part of ASPA, which is celebrated its 80th anniversary last year. The camp is designed to teach creative and efficient ways to communicate through scholastic newspapers, newsmagazines, yearbooks, literary magazines, broadcast programs and electronic media. This spring, The University of Alabama’s Department of Journalism & Creative Media will host ASPA’s annual state high school journalism convention in Tuscaloosa, Feb. 9-10 2018. Join hundreds of other middle and high school students from around the state to learn more about journalism!  Our convention will offer advanced and basic skills tracks for media students in literary magazine, newspaper, broadcast and multimedia sessions. Friday’s sessions will be held in the Ferguson Student Center, and Saturday’s sessions will take place in Reese Phifer Hall and the Digital Media Center, located in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
