The Alabama Scholastic Press Association at the University of Alabama will host middle and high school students (rising grades 6-12) for its summer journalism camp, The Long Weekend, on campus June 14-16. Registration for the camp is open until June 7. An email with camp information will be sent to the email address you provide on the registration. The cost is $125 for the weekend, which includes supplies, meals, classes and dorm.

ASPA Director Meredith Cummings said the University of Alabama journalism department is proud to carry on summer programs through ASPA, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2012.

The camp is designed to teach creative and efficient ways to communicate through scholastic newspapers, newsmagazines, yearbooks, literary magazines, broadcast programs, digital and social media. It allows students to enjoy a taste of college life and invigorates their interest in scholastic media.

The Long Weekend will feature day and evening classes to help participants gain the tools to produce prize-winning results next school year. When festivities and classes wrap up with an awards presentation, students will have a great start on the upcoming year, and will leave with a solid plan for their school newspaper, yearbook, broadcast program, Web site or literary magazine. If they attend the camp without a staff, they will leave with skills they need to do great journalism in any medium.

You can check out last year’s program to learn more about what we do. For more information on this event, contact ASPA Director Meredith Cummings at 205-348-ASPA or aspa@ua.edu.

The University of Alabama’s 30th annual Multicultural Journalism Workshop will be held June 14-23. The purpose of the workshop is to give high school students experience that teaches them more about college life and a career in media. The following students have been selected to be part of the Class of 2013, and will be notified with details through email. Students are listed in alphabetical order with their name, school and city of school, and home town.

“Go Big or Go Home!” is the theme for this year’s State Convention, suggested by the Faith Academy Rams from Mobile. So bring your BIG ideas, your BIG enthusiasm and your BIG staff fun to the University of Alabama campus Feb. 22-23. Check out the program below for everything you need to know about convention. Also please follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

If your administrator is on the fence about ASPA field trips, check out our guide for administrators, parents and teachers: Why Conventions Matter.

Check out the newsletter for more information!

New this year is a silent auction with funds benefiting our JEA Mentoring program for new advisers. Bring your pocketbooks – we have a Nick Saban autographed 2009 National Championship football, among many other items. Also bring your newspapers, lit mags and yearbooks to share. We will have a swap table for staffs to share their work with one another.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. and kickoff is at 9 a.m. The Award Ceremony begins at 4 that afternoon, and should end by 5:30 p.m. at the latest. After that, convention attendees can move to Bryant Conference Center to hear renowned journalist Bob Woodward speak at 6 p.m. Don’t forget to bring your carry-in entries to State Convention! This is a way to assess your progress and have friendly competition with other school staffs. Complete carry-in guidelines can be found at the bottom of this page. On-site competitions will also be held at State Convention. (You can register for those on the same form you use to register for convention.)

Onsite entries are $10 per student. Students may only compete in one onsite category due to the structure of the competition. The Long Weekend summer camp is here!

The Alabama Scholastic Press Association at the University of Alabama will host middle and high school students (grades 6-12) for its summer journalism camp, The Long Weekend, on campus June 15-17. Check out the program here!

ASPA Director Meredith Cummings said the University of Alabama journalism department is proud to carry on summer programs, are a vital part of ASPA, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2012.

The camp is designed to teach creative and efficient ways to communicate through scholastic newspapers, newsmagazines, yearbooks, literary magazines, broadcast programs and electronic media. It allows students to enjoy a taste of college life and invigorate their interest in scholastic media.

For more information on this event, contact ASPA Director Meredith Cummings at 205-348-ASPA or aspa@ua.edu.
